Designing Technology People Trust

Credibility is assembled from ordinary moments: an honest empty state, an accurate number, an error message that tells the truth.

Accuracy is the foundation

Before interface, before brand, a product must be right. A single figure that does not reconcile with what the user already knows will undo months of careful design work, because it forces them to verify everything else the product says.

Accuracy includes freshness. Data presented without a sense of when it was gathered invites the user to assume the worst.

Trust is lost in a single inaccurate number and recovered only across many correct ones.

Show your reasoning

When a product makes a recommendation, the person receiving it needs enough context to evaluate it. That does not mean exposing internals — it means naming the inputs that mattered and being clear about confidence.

Transparency also means being explicit about limits. A product that states what it does not cover is more credible than one that implies completeness it cannot deliver.

Fail in a way that preserves confidence

Systems fail. What determines trust is whether the failure is legible: what happened, what it affects, and what the person should do next. Vague errors convert a temporary problem into a permanent doubt.

Recovery paths matter as much as the message. Preserve entered work, offer a retry, and never make someone start over to correct a system-side issue.
